Linking 800 Years
Past, Present, and Future
In 1221, Retired Emperor Gotoba arrived in Ama. He had been exiled here after the events of the Jōkyū Disturbance – a struggle for power with the Kamakura shogunate. Never allowed back to the capital, he lived in Ama for 19 years and here he passed away.
The year 2021 marks the 800-year anniversary of his arrival on the island. Here the lore and culture centered around him lives on, coupled with the rich natural environment and made sublime.
As the anniversary year drew close, we formed Gotoba-in Kenshō Executive Committee. Together with the local people, we are striving to pass down the connections to Retired Emperor Gotoba. Moreover, we want to relay as assets to future generations the traditional lifestyles, which are rooted in the nature of Ama and enriched with contemporary values.

後鳥羽院に由緒がある伝承と文化
後鳥羽院は今日でいう、文化、芸術、芸能、スポーツに親しまれ、その伝統の継承と発展に尽くされました。なかでも和歌については、藤原定家らに命じ勅撰『新古今和歌集』を編纂させたことが知られます。そして海士に遷られてからも『遠島御百首』をはじめ、８００首近い歌を残されています。

The Emperor Gotoba Executive Committee offers a variety of cultural experience programs related to Emperor Gotoba. For example, a Japanese Sword Appreciation and Maintenance Experience, a Night visit to Oki Shrine, a Flute Experience and a Japanese Poetry(Waka/Tanka/Haiku) x laser printing Art on natural objects), etc. We also support requests from individuals or groups.
